Understanding GST and NZST

GST stands for Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, used in United Arab Emirates and Oman. NZST stands for New Zealand Standard Time, UTC+12, used in Mainland New Zealand in winter. These are specific offset definitions, not automatic substitutes for the local time in a city.

How do you convert GST to NZST?

Subtract the source offset from the destination offset: 720 − (240) = 480 minutes. Add 480 minutes from the GST time. For example, 9:00 AM GST is 5:00 PM NZST (same day). If the result crosses midnight, the calendar day changes too.

Does daylight saving time change this conversion?

The difference between these named offsets is fixed. A location may switch to a different abbreviation during daylight saving time, so an invitation saying “EST” can differ from the actual summer time in New York.

GST here means Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4), used in Dubai and Muscat year-round. It is not South Georgia Time (UTC−2).

Mainland New Zealand uses NZDT (UTC+13) in summer. The Chatham Islands have a different offset.

Which day does the converted time fall on?

“Previous day” means the destination is one calendar day before the source; “Next day” means one day after. Dates are relative to the day of your input time. A time-only conversion cannot determine a specific calendar date.
